Roofer Fires Employee After Record Revealed

A man in Peterborough was fired after it was learned that he had a criminal record for murdering a 10 year old girl in 1990. The man had been working with a roofing company until his criminal record became known.

The man had been paroled after serving 15 years of his life sentence, and allowed to work in the Peterborough area. The roofing company does not regularly conduct criminal background checks unless their clients request it of them. In this case, they were contracted to reroof a public school building.

While the man had been a good employee with the company, his employers let him go when his criminal past came to light. His past made him unfit to continue on with their contractual obligations.

Pre-employment screening checks are a useful tool in assessing not only a person’s capacity to work, but their ability to do so as well. Companies who opt not to conduct screening on new employees may well find themselves liable in situations where they have brought unfit employees to a client’s work site.
