Faked Diploma

Verifying a candidate’s educational credentials is a quick and easy way of assessing his or her eligibility for a position. It is not unheard of for candidates to forge educational credentials, and employers can easily fall prey to misinformation. Without verifying the information with the issuing institution, there is no way to gauge the validity of the claim. Here is a story of one such attempt.

A BackCheck client requested that we verify a candidate’s education using the copy of the diploma he provided. However, when we sent this to the school, we were informed that the candidate had never attended the school. The diploma had been faked, and the registrar who had signed the forged document had been dead for two years prior to the graduation date.

The client was disappointed with their candidate, but pleased to have been able to avoid making a poor hiring decision, which would have cost them further down the line. It always pays to check educational claims.

BackCheck is Canada’s leader in pre-employment background screening. BackCheck has built a network of contacts at educational insitutions across the country in order to facilitate our verifications. Our education verification service is a quick and affordable means to vet your candidates. Do you know who you’re hiring?
